CASCADE Montana Fly Fishing
Fishing Cascade Montana, The Missouri, & More
It is no secret that Montana’s small towns are truly special places. People are friendly and appreciative of other friendly folk regardless of where they hail from. Cascade is no different. Home to more cows than people, Cascade is the embodiment of Montana living. To the west, you will find the Rocky Mountain Front. To the east, you’ll find some of the finest prairie lands in the world.
The Missouri River serves as the connection between the two great landscapes. The Missouri River harbors more trout per mile than any other river in Montana. When anglers evaluate the average size of fish, it becomes clear that the Missouri is one of the premier fly fishing rivers in the world.
Like many small towns in Montana, you will find a couple of quality establishments to “re-hydrate” or grab a bite to eat after a day on the river. Cascade is adorned with three such places: The Angus Bar, the Driftwood, and Sportsman’s, all of which are aptly named. You can find a great breakfast at the Homestead Cafe, and some of the best service in the United States.
If you feel like an evening cruise, you can take old US Hwy 91 to Ulm for an authentic steak house experience, or head west to Craig for BBQ at Izaak’s. Regardless of direction, you will realize why it’s called, “Big Sky Country.”
As for lodging, I will always be partial to the Trout Motel. The owner, Mike Bushley, is kind of a cousin of mine, and he treats everyone like family. Our ancestors homesteaded and ranched in the nearby Judith Basin in the 1800’s, and somehow we have found ourselves sharing a trout stream now.
You might not be able to find a $200 bottle of red in Cascade, but you’ll find a $3 Coors Banquet and get to enjoy it on the frontier!
