Stillwater River Fly Fishing | Montana River Descriptions by Wet Net Outfitters

Multi-day fishing trips in Montana often feel stale and predictable. Many guides stick to well-defined areas, fishing the same familiar beats day after day without venturing far from their meeting points. That’s not how we operate. Montana is a vast state, brimming with countless miles of trout streams that rival or even surpass the “bucket list” destinations like the Madison or the Missouri. Along the Yellowstone River corridor, Livingston and Big Timber serve as ideal base camps for exploring not only the big-name rivers but also a wealth of hidden gems. Enter the Trout Tour.

It all starts with the guides. Fishing guides aren’t created equal, and the best ones excel on specific waters or with particular techniques. Our guides are like Swiss Army knives—versatile, skilled, and ready for anything. Just as elite golfers can win on any type of course, we’ve assembled a team of guides who can adapt to diverse conditions and uncover fish on different waters every day. This adaptability is the lynchpin of the Trout Tour and the reason these multi-day trips are so successful for our guests.

On the Trout Tour, we fish four main classes of water, covering 400 distinct river miles within a short drive of Livingston.

Large Rivers

The Yellowstone River is often the starting point—a sprawling, iconic fishery with over 200 miles of high-quality water that offers something for every angler. It’s the perfect warm-up day, allowing guests to refine their cast and reawaken muscle memory. The Yellowstone’s diversity ensures unique experiences, from the rugged Yankee Jim Canyon floats in an inflatable raft to the serene cutbanks of the lower river. This is big water fishing at its best, with ample room to cast and the opportunity to land some truly exceptional trout.

Medium-Sized Rivers

The Boulder and Stillwater Rivers bring excitement to the tour. These fast-flowing, rock-strewn tributaries are where our guide team thrives. Rowing these dynamic rivers is as engaging as fishing them, with steep gradients, pocket water, and an abundance of wild trout eager to take flies. The dry fly season here is remarkably long, making these rivers a paradise for anglers who love surface action. For those who enjoy wading, these rivers also offer plenty of opportunities to step out of the boat and work productive runs on foot.

Ranch Waters

Montana’s private ranches are like miniature national parks, each with its own untouched trout streams and breathtaking landscapes. These waters provide unmatched seclusion and the chance to fish for unpressured trout in pristine environments. A day on ranch waters is as tranquil as it is rewarding, with no rush to launch or crowds to compete with. Instead, it’s just you, the river, and perhaps a few hoofprints along the bank. Lunch is a highlight, featuring hot fajitas or locally sourced cheeseburgers prepared on-site. Afternoons often bring the best fishing, with sunlit waters and eager trout. For those seeking a truly unique experience, ranch waters deliver in spades.

Spring Creeks

Fishing spring creeks is the ultimate test of skill in fly fishing—a puzzle with no picture or a game played from the tips. These waters demand precision in fly choice, presentation, and positioning, but the rewards are unmatched. The sense of accomplishment in catching a spring creek trout is unparalleled, as every fish is a testament to an angler’s expertise. Livingston is fortunate to have two world-class spring creeks—DePuy’s and Armstrong’s—just a few miles away. These creeks offer exceptional fishing opportunities year-round, with March through May being particularly productive. For those seeking adventure, a few unnamed spring creeks north of Big Timber provide equally rewarding experiences during June.

Private Water Trips

Private Water Trips | Streams & Lakes

For a truly secluded experience we offer our guests an extensive array of private water options. From small streams harboring untouched trout to lakes teeming with trout that approach mythical size, Wet Net Outfitters strives to provide a prodigious private water experience to our guests.

  • Rivers and streams too pristine to blast online
  • Fish in total seclusion with no other anglers in site
  • Experience truly spectacular Montana ranches

When most anglers allow their eyelids to droop and dreams to develop they see an immaculate trout stream, trout rising to mayflies, and no one in sight. Wet Net Outfitters has dreamt of this experience and provides it all season through our network of exclusive private water leases and limited access spring creeks.  Here anglers can expect to always “get the spot” and enjoy an intimate day with environment around them.

Cutthroat Haven

As the lessor of some of these bodies of water we find it imperative to protect their identity. Yellowstone Cutthroat, especially the sizable specimens, need to be treated with supreme respect. Because of this we offer a limited number of rods in a week to ensure that all of our guests have fresh, wild, native fish to catch. In my eyes I have witnessed very few fisheries that compare to this stream.  Anglers can expect to fish a variety of surface imitations from caddis to frogs. And streamers fished down and across.

The Season: Arpil, late June, July, August, and September

DePuy’s Spring Creek

DePuy’s Spring Creek is perhaps the most iconic spring creek in the Mountain West. Its fertile waters provide an optimal environment to grow and overabundance of insects and trout. Because of its ground sourced water, the creek provides stable flows and temperatures all year. From late March through early October dry fly anglers rejoice for good hatches of beatis, PMD’s, sulfurs, midges, multiple species of caddis, damsels, and terrestrials. Year round anglers can expect some of the best subsurface fishing in the state from late fall into spring. While it is a gin-clear spring creek, anglers that make a proper presentation with an adequate offering can expect to be rewarded.

The Season: We fish DePuy’s Spring Creek 12 months a year and each month offers up spectacular fly fishing.

Armstrong’s Spring Creek

Framed by the Beartooth Mountains, Armstrong’s Spring Creek is the consummate spring creek. While DePuy’s has gained the present day notoriety, historically Armstrong’s was THE spring creek in Paradise Valley. In fact, the water that roars out of the Yellowstone Aquifer to form Armstrong’s is the same spring that feeds DePuy’s, the creek simply crosses a property line! Armstrong’s provides an intimate angling experience and some of the finest dry fly fishing known to man. Solid hatches of beatis, PMD’s, sulfurs, midges, multiple species of caddis, damsels, and terrestrials keep fish looking toward the surface more often than not. Beautiful flats, broad riffles, and weed beds galore provide ample habitat for trout and insects alike.

The Season: We fish Armstrong’s Spring Creek 12 months a year and each month offers up something special. The dry fly scene begins in late March and runs into October.
